Texas Campus Compact Board Member to Join
President-Elect Barack Obama’s Transition Team
AUSTIN, TX – Texas Campus Compact (TXCC), a state-wide non-profit promoting civic engagement and service learning in higher education, announces the appointment of TXCC Board Member and immediate past Chair, Dr. Juliet Garcia to President-Elect Barack Obama’s Transition Team.
The President-Elect met Dr. Garcia when he visited University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College in February during his campaign, meeting with faith-based groups and then students. Dr. Garcia, President of University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, was the first Mexican American woman in the nation to become president of a college or university.
"I consider public service to be our highest calling; so I am greatly honored to have been invited to take part in the historic transition of our young democracy," Garcia said in a written statement to The Brownsville Herald. Garcia will join the transition team in Washington, DC, shortly.
Texas Campus Compact is a leader in building civic engagement into campus and academic life in Texas. As the next generation of leaders and citizens, young people are a powerful force in today's political scene. The Compact encourages higher education institutions to help educate and empower students and role models, such as Dr. Garcia, embody the excellence that can be achieved. More information the programs of TXCC can be found online at www.TexasCampusCompact.org.
