SERVICE DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities vary from campus to campus. Throughout the interviewing and placement process, the TXCC staff will work with you to find a position that matches your skills and interests. The TXCC VISTA project has 3 primary goals. Each VISTA will address one or more of these goals:

  1. Increase awareness of service learning (SL) on campuses and demonstrate how SL can be integrated into educational courses. Activities might include:

    • Audit courses being offered on their campuses and with the help of the Texas Campus Compact and Regional Coordinators; identify opportunities for integration of service learning.
    • Meet with faculty/staff on respective campuses to increase awareness of SL and to obtain buy in; cross-institutional collaboration between regional sites.
    • Make presentations to respective campuses to introduce and/or increase awareness relative to SL.
    • Decimate SL information regarding training, conferences, best practices, etc.
    • Assist in developing a tracking system for campuses relative to SL activities.

  2. Increase College participation in under served communities. This will be done via partnership with Texas Higher Education Coordination Board/Texas Campus Compact. Example include:

    • Assist regional coordinators in identifying regional college and university sites interested piloting a service learning course for public schools to addressing Closing the Gaps Campaign.
    • Assist regions in identifying public school sites to participate in THECB/TXCC Motivational and Awareness Campaign "Closing the Gaps".
    • Participate in the Development of evaluation tools to measure success and determine areas to work on.
    • Encourage and strengthen the involvement of faculty, staff, students and community by obtaining media coverage and sharing progress reports/accomplishments, news, articles, local and national publications, etc." Assist regional coordinators in identifying regional college and university sites interested piloting a service learning course for public schools to addressing Closing the Gaps Campaign.

  3. Promote community service and volunteerism on campus throughout Texas to benefit needy communities, by partnering with community-based organizations including faith-based organizations that provide social services. Examples Include:

    • Audit regional campuses to determine what's being done in the areas of community service/volunteerism.
    • Promote awareness of community service/volunteerism opportunities through presentations, flyers, brochures, speakers, articles, etc.
    • Facilitate partnerships with community agencies, residents, campus organizations, students/faculty/staff, etc.
    • Develop a tracking system to record data such as; number of volunteers, hours of volunteer service, donated goods & services, number of individual impacted, etc.

In exchange for a year of service, Texas VISTAs earn the following benefits:

  • Post-service Education Award of $4,725 to pay for college tuition or student loans
  • Monthly living allowance of $808

  • Relocation Allowance if relocating from outside of Texas
  • Non-competitive eligibility for federal employment in the year following service
  • Housing and meal plans are available at some campuses

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Demonstrate commitment to and experience in community service or service-learning
  • Experience working with college students
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including conflict resolution and public speaking
  • Strong skills in project and multi-task management, leadership, event planning, and time management
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle
